Albury - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Albury is a major regional city in New South Wales, Australia, located on the Hume Highway on the northern side of the Murray River. It is located wholly within the boundaries of the City of Albury Local Government Area. Albury is the second major city of the Riverina and the second largest inland city in New South Wales, behind Wagga Wagga.[4] Albury has an urban population of 53,507 people.[1] It is separated from its twin city in Victoria, Wodonga by the Murray River. Together the two cities form an urban area with a population of more than 90,000.[5] It is 554 kilometres (344 mi) from the state capital Sydney and 326 kilometres (203 mi) from the Victorian capital Melbourne.[6]

Given it's location and manufacturing business and demographic, i have decided to base my architectural installation around Albury. As a major regional city, it not only is it about half way between Sydney and Melbourne, it has an incredibly interest history with the sense of colonial and post colonial and national infrastructure projects. It represents the protectionist political stance that was adopted by the New South Wales government prior to federation, and directly impacted from the differing guages used by both states on railways - As such, rail has played an integral and memorable in the towns development and defining character.
